Therapies We Offer

Respecting the laws of natural movement, Spiral Stabilization is highly effective, curative and preventative. It is an extremely versatile method and can therefore be used by anyone who wishes to improve their posture, treat back pain, prevent injuries, maintain good health and well-being or to improve sports conditioning.

Chi Therapy is a holistic body and mind approach originating from the mountains of South Korea using acupressure and sound. This sound and acupressure energy treatment releases stored stress and tension in the body to improve physical mobility and energy flow.

The EMMETT Technique is a unique form of body relaxation therapy involving the application of light finger pressure at specific points.  It is based on the belief that light touch can trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body, and that the therapist may thereby help relieve feelings of tension.

Spiral Stabilization Method

Treating Back Pain Effectively

Spiral Stabilization is a revolutionary exercise method invented by a Czech medical doctor, Dr Richard Smisek, which respects the laws of natural movement. The method has proven successful in Germany for over 20 years, where treatments are paid for through medical insurance.

Spiral Stabilization is highly effective, curative and preventative. It is an extremely versatile method and it can therefore be used by anyone who wishes to improve their posture, treat back pain, prevent injuries, maintain good health and well-being and to improve sports conditioning.

Spiral Stabilization effectively and permanently treats spinal disorders and disorders in the main joints. More specifically, it treats back, neck, shoulder and hip pain, chronic pain, sciatica, disc herniation, scoliosis, lordosis, kyphosis, headaches, migraines, flat feet, hallux valgus, back pain in pregnancy, chest related issues such as asthma and other conditions. It is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment that achieves lasting results, especially for clients with disc herniation and scoliosis.

The method is suitable for children, adults, the elderly and athletes. Simple exercises can be comfortably performed at home or under the supervision of your therapist.

Build a healthy spine

Respecting the laws of natural movement

Spiral Stabilization exercises and manual therapy build a healthy spine by releasing tightness in the spine and vertical muscle chains. It also strengthens weaknesses and encourages activity in the spiral muscle chains. It is an effective preventative health programme for all ages, including children and athletes. It is suitable during all stages of pregnancy subject to exercise modification.

Your therapist will recommend a personalised exercise programme to be practiced 1-2 times per day for 10-15 minutes, using the elasticated exercise cord. The frequency and duration of this daily programme may vary depending on your current health condition.

Effective Treatment & Prevention

Spiral Stabilization exercises and manual therapy are used for treatment of back pain including non-surgical treatment of disc herniation, treatment of failed back surgery syndrome and to help stabilise the gait after hip joint surgery. It is also used by athletes to enhance performance and mobilise muscle synergies.

Muscle chain training (Spiral Stabilization exercises) allows for the treatment and prevention of:

  • Intervertebral disc herniation
  • Scoliosis
  • Chronic back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Complications after spinal surgery
  • Hip, knee and shoulder joint disorders
  • Lordosis, kyphosis
  • Flat feet, hallux valgus
  • Headaches, migraines, dizziness
  • Asthma
  • Back pain in pregnancy
  • Other conditions including Ankylosing Spondylitis and Osteoporosis without pathological fracture – click here for a comprehensive listing on the official UK Spiral Stabilization website.

Spiral Stabilization re-trains the physical body and its muscular structure to work more fluidly and as nature intended. It can be very effective for relieving back pain both pre- and post-disc operation as well as improving overall postural imbalances.

The function of muscle chains can be used in treatment of disc herniation, complications after spine surgery, scoliosis and joint disfunctions – in hip, knee, ankle and shoulder joint. In all mentioned diagnoses, stabilising the body with the spiral muscle chains allows the treatment to be more effective than traditionally used procedures.

Spiral Stabilization exercises and manual therapy can also help prevent de-generation of conditions for those with postural issues and replacement joints.

Osteoporosis: "I can trust my body again"

“I received a diagnosis of severe osteoporosis after sustaining several fractures in my spine which left me with serious mobility issues and musculoskeletal pain. I had made some progress through physio rehab and then a friend kindly introduced me to Spiral Stabilization sessions with Françoise at the Chi Zone.

After having the first session, I was already walking better and felt more upright. By practising the exercises religiously at home in between sessions I have managed to build up and maintain a level of strength and flexibility in my body which has given me a sense of freedom and resilience I haven’t felt in a long time. My balance has improved and I feel I can trust my body again. I am convinced that these sessions have made the real difference in my recovery.

Through these postural exercises I have even gained back some height as due to the compression fractures in my spine I had lost a number of inches/centimetres.

Françoise emanates care and positivity and pays so much attention to you as an individual tailoring the programme/protocol to meet your individual needs.  She ensures that the body is positioned correctly at all times so that the exercises can be practised safely at home. Through the energy work that Francoise provides alongside the postural exercises, I have also noticed that my energy levels and clarity of mind have improved giving me a renewed sense of vitality.

Spiral Stabilisation is the light at the end of the tunnel I so desperately needed but at the time didn’t know existed. This is important work that The Chi Zone is doing and I wholeheartedly recommend it. I am very grateful to my friend for the introduction to Spiral Stabilization and the Chi Zone and to Françoise for all her help and support.

I believe that even if you haven’t been diagnosed with a health problem that you would benefit tremendously from having these sessions. We don’t know how much better/how well we are able to feel until we feel it/experience it.”

Back pain: "It has done wonders for my back"

“Having suffered with lower back pain for some years and trying to find a treatment which would help me has been a real problem until I discovered The Chi Zone.

Apart from attending their park flow sessions in Dorchester and thoroughly enjoying and benefitting from being outside and surrounded by wildlife in an uplifting environment I also discovered they offer Spiral Stabilization.

Curious to find out more I booked myself in for 5 sessions with Françoise. I cannot recommend this treatment enough, it has done wonders for my back, each day I see and feel an improvement with my mobility and posture and definitely less pain in the lower back.

I have been given a set of exercises to do and I really look forward to doing them usually twice a day as I know it is doing me good and giving me relief. Françoise is very knowledgeable and adapts the exercises to suit me. I also receive as part of the session chi acupressure and in a session where I mentioned I could feel a slight pain in the right side of my back Françoise worked on the area doing chi acupressure and it was like a miracle. I got off the couch and the pain had vanished. I can honestly say that Spiral Stabilization  has been so beneficial, the results have been great and I will continue to enjoy doing my exercises as the whole body gains from the stretching and improved posture. Thank you very much.”

Undiagnosed back pain: "No more painkillers"

The hospital did all the scans but could find no reason for the constant pain in my back.

After learning the Spiral Stabilization exercises, they have strengthened my back and enabled me to move more freely without having to take pain killers. I was on eight per day.

I understand it is important to do the exercises daily and regularly to reap the benefits. Thank you for your help.”

Chi Acupressure Therapy

Clearing + Rebalancing Body and Mind

In the East for more than 5,000 years, there have been people dedicated to working with nature’s energy to support the better health and wellbeing of others. Originating from the mountains of South Korea, Chi Acupressure Therapy is a holistic body and mind approach using acupressure and sound.

A full body Chi Acupressure Therapy session is a fully clothed, sound and acupressure energy treatment which releases stored stress and tension in the body to improve physical mobility and energy flow. The calming and strengthening energies of your practitioner flow to you via touch and sound in order to clear, recharge and build your energetic and physical strength.

Your Chi Practitioner uses a special breathing technique to transmit energy through sound as well as using acupressure to work on the individual’s energy meridian system. Unblocking and opening the energy meridian channels aids the Practitioner to rebalance and recharge your energy levels.

A full body session allows your Practitioner to review your whole energy system. They can focus on areas they sense need special attention and then guide Chi throughout the whole body.

We recommend a minimum of two sessions. During the first consultation we will assess your current health situation, discuss what you would like to achieve going forward and kickstart the healing process. The second and any subsequent sessions will build on the initial clearing and rebalancing that has been done in order to further improve and stabilise your condition. For those with deeply held or chronic issues, your therapist may advise a course of sessions over the next few weeks in order to achieve the best results.

Incheol talks about Chi Therapy

Chi Therapy for Children

De-stressing + Rebalancing

These hands-on acupressure sessions stimulate acu-points to help muscles relax, release tension and improve blood flow.

Acupressure has been shown to be effective in relieving a variety of pains in different populations. Chi Acupressure Therapy also focuses on improving energy flow throughout the body, helping the client to deeply relax mentally too.

Combined Therapy + Exercise

We also offer the option to learn new clearing techniques and strengthening exercises during a longer one hour session. We find that dual action can be much more powerful for longer term results. This means that the therapy is the main focus of each session but your practitioner also teaches you a tailored technique or exercise(s) for you to do each day to support your continued progress.

We see time and time again that positive client action between appointments makes a real difference to the pace of your progress. These new exercises / routines also support greater long-term benefits both physically and mentally. We understand the need to actively care for our mind and body every day so we give you the tools to do this.

For Babies and Young People

Chi Therapy can help to release tension and stress from babies and youngsters’ bodies and help calm their mental energies.

Babies and youngsters can pick up a lot of stress and negative energy from their early experiences – including the birth process – and surrounding environments. They can be very vulnerable energetically which can have knock-on effects onto their physical and mental resilience and overall health and strength as they grow.

Shocks to their system which are not cleared and rebalanced early on can have long-term effects on both their physical and mental health and capabilities as an individual. Early support and intervention may prevent these longer term effects developing and help support their natural healing and personal energetic balance. Young people can also feel anxious about returning to school, managing workloads and studying for exams. Chi Therapy can help calm their mental energies and support them to manage these stresses better.

EMMETT Technique

The EMMETT Technique

How does EMMETT work?

It is based on the belief that light touch can trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body, and that the therapist thereby may help relieve tension which results in feelings of improved comfort.

We believe a good analogy is that of a digital touch-screen. With the touch-screen, if you touch too hard, nothing happens. If you touch on the wrong spot nothing happens. If you hold for too long, all the icons start to shake. But if you touch with just the right amount of pressure in a specific location, an application opens and you are good to go. We believe the EMMETT points are small sensory receptors that allow access to the brain via the therapists’ touch. With the correct light touch, the brain receives and evaluates this stimulus and initiates the relaxation response in the soft tissue.  There are receptor points all over the body so the therapist can target the area of concern.  It may sound surprising but the relaxation response and the feeling of ease in the area is often immediate.

The pressure required is not heavy or painful. “No pain no gain” has NO place in the EMMETT therapist’s approach.

ref: EMMETT UK website

Benefits of the EMMETT Technique

Most common benefits for people:

The relaxing nature of the technique results in people reporting typical responses such as:

  • more restful sleep
  • enhanced mood
  • a sense of lightness within their body
  • improved comfort and ease within the areas treated such as back, abdomen, hips, legs, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, arms, hands and neck.
Most people report an immediate and significant improvement with the problem that has been troubling them. Many people who previously had limitations on what they could do, find that they can perform these actions more easily after treatment.
What to expect

People can be treated while sitting, standing or lying down.

The treatment can be applied directly to the skin or through clothing.

Sessions can last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes if the EMMETT Technique is used alone. However Françoise and Incheol often combine the EMMETT Technique in a Chi Acupressure or Spiral Stabilization session for deeper ranging effects.
